Global Positioning System 

Have you ever seen some new technology product and think to yourself that it is never going to go anywhere? Have you ever heard of some break through in technology and assumed you would never see it being used practically? Many people have felt this way with each passing year since we have entered the technology era. There have been too many times when I have had to take back my words to ever again say that I will not own a certain piece of electronic or technical equipment. Years ago I said I would never own a cell phone and now if I leave home with out it I have to turnaround and go back. I said I would never own a home computer and now I check my emails daily the prices of equipment are becoming more affordable all the time so more and more people are buying it.

When we moved to our lake home six years ago my husband complained about the professional fishermen that used a global positioning system to mark their locations on the lake. He said that this was not sports fishing and that the use of a global positioning system should be banned from fishing tournaments. He thinks differently now that he has one in his boat. Initially he bought a handheld global positioning system to use on his four-wheeler when he was hunting. The woods and swamp that they go deer hunting in are very large with no roads running through them. Several hunters have been lost through the years and two of them died from hypothermia. After the deer hunting season he used the global positioning system to mark different spots on the lake for ice fishing. That spring he bought a bracket so he could mount it in the boat. He completely changed his mind about the use of the global positioning system once he started using one.

This spring he bought a new global positioning system for the boat. It is a global positioning system and lake graph combined. He was able to purchase a chip that inserts into the graph that shows all the structure in the bottom of the lake. He can mark spots where he has caught a fish so that he can go directly back to it the next time he is on the lake. This also includes a fish finder so that you are marking where the fish are located. I reminded him of his thoughts about the professional fishermen using these devices. He admits that he felt that way when they were expensive and he could not afford them, now that they are affordable he loves using it. In a way he is right because now that more people have them it make for a more even playing field. They are also a great safety device in case fog comes over the lake because you can punch in the coordinates for home and be directed there.Needless to say then that nowadays I never comment on the salebility of any new technology or device, let alone the global positioning system.
